El Salvador’s history and current reality is filled with inspiration of the role of women in the struggle for human rights and gender equality. In the context of the International Day against Violence against Women and the 25th Anniversary of the assassination of 4 U.S. church women in El Salvador, the CIS is organizing a special Spanish school focused on the struggle of women in El Salvador and commemorate important historical dates in November and December of this year. Program participants will also participate in the 16th anniversary of the assassination of the Jesuit Priests and their two women co-workers. CIS program has focused on building women’s participation, confronting traditional marginalization in community decision making. CIS grassroots organizers, with the support of many women’s organizations in El Salvador, work to raise consciousness about women’s rights. CIS is working with U.S. based Salvadoran Enterprises for Women to coordinate a new project to support women’s organization, training, conscious raising and local enterprises to improve the quality of life for women and their families. Roses in December, 1981 documentary film by Ana Carrigan on the life of Maryknoll lay missioner, Jean Donovan. The video is out of print, but many major public and university libraries have a copy.
Warning: contains graphic footage of the four women’s bodies being exhumed from their common grave at San Pedro Nonualco.
Includes extensive interviews with Jean’s parents, friends and brother; also includes interviews with Ita Ford’s brother, Bill, who was instrumental in getting their case to Congressional hearings. Also of note: the testimony at those hearing from the U.S. ambassador to El Salvador and Jean Kirkpatrick’s infamous quote, “let’s remember these were no ordinary nuns…they were activists…”
