Disaster Strikes El Salvador:  1.4 Million Left Homeless

February, 2001

El Salvador has been shaken by multiple earthquakes, the two strongest exactly one month apart.  The destruction is devastating, leaving 1.4 million people homeless and over 1,000 dead.  Rampant government corruption keeps disaster relief funds lining the pockets of the wealthy while the rural poor receive sparse, if any, material aid.

El Salvador is a continual emergency due to structural poverty and worsening economic conditions.  Inadequate healthcare, housing, water systems, and electricity all contribute to the disaster of natural phenomena, including Hurricane Mitch in 1998 and the two earthquakes this year.  The Salvadoran government worsens these conditions with pro-multinational company, anti-worker and anti-poor policies like unconditioned dollarization and privatization, at the behest of the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the US government.

Contribute to Reconstruction

While the government uses funds for its own profit, many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are working on short and long term strategies to support communities in affected areas badly in need of assistance.  Please channel your contributions through these NGOs.  With the CIS, 100% of your contribution goes to the communities affected for emergency aid and organizing efforts.
