Unfortunately today, Monday October 17th, 2011 it is still raining here in El Salvador. The country is in a national state of emergency. According to Civil Protection, as of yesterday there were 32 deaths and 20,000 people in shelters. El Salvador is one of the most vulnerable country in the world, the infrastructure is very fragile, and as always the poorest are most affected by all of the floods, overflowing of rivers, mudslides, collapses, etc.
The CIS communities that have been most affected are: Comasagua, Tamanique, La Isla Tasajera, La Isla El Espritu Santo, San Francisco Chinameca, San Rafael Cedros. For example, Comasagua has been completely inaccessible since Thursday due to huge landslides and communities within Comasagua like La Loma, San Luis los Ranchos, Arcoiris, and many others are blocked off by additional landslides within Comasagua. The City Hall of Comasagua has over 300 people evacuated as a preventative measure living in the community shelter. Workers at Hospital Rosales are organizing emergency brigades to San Vicente, Ahuachapán, and Sonsonate and have also asked the CIS for aid.
The CIS is collecting donations to send to the families in the most affected areas. We are collecting monetary donations, basic food (rice, beans, salt, corn flower, sugar), and clothing sheets, and blankets, in good condition. For monetray donations please visit: donate
