Water is Life! Peace Corps and CIS Join Forces with Cantón El Tanque for a Healthier Future

May 28, 2026. Access to clean water is a fundamental human right, yet many rural communities continue to face severe water sanitation crises due to institutional neglect.

In Centro de Intercambio y Solidaridad (CIS) has partnered with Peace Corps volunteer and local leaders to restore water safety in Cantón El Tanque, Santa Ana, El Salvador.

In Cantón El Tanque, the local community identified that their water infrastructure—consisting of a local well and a distribution tank—had been completely neglected by responsible entities for over 12 years. According to public health guidelines, these structures require maintenance and deep cleaning three to four times a year to prevent contamination.

Following a rigorous water analysis conducted in coordination with the University of Santa Ana, laboratory results confirmed high levels of bacterial and microbial contamination, proving the water was entirely unsafe for human consumption.

Faced with this critical public health hazard, CIS, the Peace Corps volunteer, and community members moved quickly to organize a collective response.

To provide an immediate and long-term solution to the sanitation crisis, CIS delivered 60 eco-friendly water filters to local families. This direct intervention currently guarantees immediate access to safe, clean drinking water for approximately 200 people across 60 households.

At CIS, we firmly believe that transformation happens when organizations and communities unite in true solidarity. This intervention is part of our ongoing commitment to defending environmental health and promoting community-led development across El Salvador.
